Baby dentist
Baby dentist in Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion
Has the first tooth just come in? It’s the right time for a first visit, around age 1: a short, gentle exam on your lap, and simple tips for home.
- First visit around age 1
- Exam covered by the RAMQ
- Baby stays on your lap

Why see a dentist so early?
Baby teeth help with chewing and speaking, and they hold the space for adult teeth. An early first visit lets us spot a cavity as soon as it starts and show you the right habits before a problem appears.
A short, gentle visit
A few minutes, with no intimidating instruments: we look at the gums and the first teeth.
You stay by their side
Baby stays on your lap from start to finish. You see everything and can ask all your questions.
Tips for home
Brushing, how much toothpaste, bottles, teething: simple answers suited to their age.
Covered by the RAMQ
Before age 10, the yearly exam is covered by the RAMQ. Just bring your baby’s health insurance card.

At home
Good habits from birth to age 3
- From birth: clean the gums twice a day with a clean, damp washcloth.
- From the first tooth: brush twice a day, especially at bedtime, with a soft toothbrush and a rice-grain amount of fluoride toothpaste.
- At bedtime: no bottle of milk or juice to fall asleep; the sugar stays on the teeth all night.
- From age 3: a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

Your questions about baby teeth
At what age should I bring my baby to the dentist?
Around age 1, or within 6 months after the first tooth appears. That is the Canadian Dental Association’s recommendation. There is no need to wait until all the teeth are in.
Is my baby’s visit free?
Before age 10, the yearly exam, emergency exams, X-rays, fillings and extractions are covered by the RAMQ. Bring your baby’s health insurance card. Some care, such as sealants, is not covered. What the RAMQ covers for children.
How much toothpaste for a baby?
From the first tooth until age 3: a rice-grain amount of fluoride toothpaste, twice a day. From age 3: a pea-sized amount. You do the brushing.
How can I ease teething?
A clean, cool teething ring (not frozen), a clean finger gently massaging the gums, and lots of cuddles. If your baby has a fever or seems unwell, see a doctor: teething doesn’t explain everything.
Is a bottle at night a problem?
Yes, if it contains milk, juice or a sugary drink: the sugar stays on the teeth during sleep and promotes cavities. If your baby needs a bottle to fall asleep, give water.
What if my baby falls or breaks a tooth?
Call us at 514-533-3368: dental emergencies are seen the same day (subject to availability). In Valleyfield, the clinic is open 7 days a week.
