Dental care covered by the RAMQ for children

In Quebec, children under 10 are entitled to several dental services covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). At Go Dentiste, these services are billed directly to the Régie on presentation of the child’s health insurance card, in Valleyfield and in Vaudreuil-Dorion.

Services covered by the RAMQ before age 10

  • One annual exam and emergency exams
  • The necessary X-rays
  • Local anesthesia
  • Fillings (amalgam on back teeth, composite on front teeth)
  • Extractions and certain surgeries
  • Certain endodontic treatments (root canal, pulpotomy on a baby tooth)

Services not covered by the RAMQ

Cleaning (scaling and polishing), fluoride application, sealants, orthodontics and cosmetic treatments are not covered by the RAMQ. They are, however, often reimbursed by the parents’ private insurance or by the Canadian Dental Care Plan for eligible families. We tell you the cost of these services before providing them.

After age 10

From the 10th birthday, dental care is no longer covered by the RAMQ, except in certain situations (social assistance recipients, surgery in a hospital setting). Teenagers may be covered by their parents’ insurance or by the CDCP.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay anything for a child under 10?

Not for covered services, which are billed directly to the RAMQ. Only non-covered services (cleaning, fluoride, sealants) are charged, after you have been informed of the cost.

What should I bring?

The child’s valid health insurance card. If it has expired, the RAMQ cannot be billed.

Is the cleaning free for children?

No, it is not covered by the RAMQ. It is, however, often reimbursed by private insurance and by the CDCP.

My child turns 10 in two months: is he still covered?

Yes, until the day before the 10th birthday. We recommend planning the necessary care before that date.
