Bonuses, incentives and raises in dental clinics: 10 questions

Bonuses are multiplying in dental clinics facing staff shortages. Here are the ones that exist, how they are calculated and how to avoid unpleasant surprises.

What is a signing bonus in a dental clinic?

A lump sum paid at signing or after the probation period to attract a hygienist, an assistant or a receptionist. It is common during shortages. Check whether it is conditional on a minimum length of employment and whether it must be repaid if you leave early.

Are performance bonuses common in dental clinics?

They exist mainly for dentists (percentage) and sometimes for hygienists (production or recall targets) and the front desk (agenda occupancy). They should remain a complement, never a substitute for a proper hourly rate. Ask for the exact formula and the amounts actually paid last year.

What is an employee referral bonus?

A sum paid to the employee who recommends a person who is eventually hired, often after three to six months on the job. It signals that the clinic invests in its team and prefers recruiting through its people rather than agencies. Ask about the amount and conditions.

Are annual raises mandatory?

No. The law only requires compliance with the minimum wage and its indexation ($16.60 an hour on May 1, 2026). Raises depend on each clinic’s policy. A structured clinic plans an annual review with criteria; ask for them at the interview and get them written into the offer.

What percentage raise is reasonable?

An annual review often follows inflation plus recognition of experience gained; a promotion or new responsibilities justify more. Always compare with the provincial median for your role: if you are below the median with experience, a larger catch-up is legitimate.

Are evening and weekend premiums common?

In clinics open 7 days, yes, but they are not mandatory. They take the form of an enhanced rate, a fixed premium per shift or a benefit (fixed day off). Compare the real annual value: two weekend shifts a month at an enhanced rate can add up to several thousand dollars.

Can a bonus replace group insurance?

No. A bonus is taxable and one-off; group insurance protects against risk (disability, drugs, care). If a clinic offers no insurance, negotiate a contribution to individual insurance or a higher rate instead, and check eligibility for the public prescription drug plan.

How do you make sure a promised bonus will actually be paid?

Have it written into the job offer or contract, with the amount, conditions and payment date. Ask to speak with a current employee. A bonus « depending on clinic results » without a precise formula is a weak commitment.

Do dentists receive bonuses?

Their percentage pay is already variable, but some contracts add a guaranteed minimum in the first year, a set-up bonus or a share in the clinic’s value (ownership). At Go Dentiste, the path to ownership is described on the Become an owner dentist page.

How do you factor bonuses into comparing two offers?

Add up over twelve months: rate × guaranteed hours + certain bonuses + quantified benefits (insurance, RRSP, dental care, training). Exclude bonuses conditional on targets you do not control. The best offer is the one with the highest guaranteed income, not the one that promises the most.
