Visiting the clinic before accepting: what to observe

Ten minutes of visiting say more than thirty minutes of interview. Here is the checklist, room by room, to read a clinic like a professional.

Comptoir d'accueil de la clinique Go Dentiste de Salaberry-de-Valleyfield

Should you always visit before accepting?

Yes, even for a part-time position: the visit reveals the equipment, cleanliness, organization and real atmosphere. A clinic that refuses a visit or limits it to the waiting room has something to hide. Ask to see the treatment rooms, sterilization and the staff room.

What should you look at from the entrance?

How the front desk welcomes patients (smile, waiting time, tone), the cleanliness of the waiting room, signage (hours, languages, information), the general state (light, noise, smells). You will see how patients are treated, hence how the team is treated.

What should you check in a treatment room?

The age and adjustment of chairs and operator stools, screen placement, lighting, storage, cleanliness of surfaces, the presence of sleeves and sharps containers, noise. Sit on the assistant’s or hygienist’s stool: is it comfortable?

And in sterilization?

A dedicated room with separate dirty and clean zones, recent autoclaves, a visible biological test log, dated pouches, a washer-disinfector or clean ultrasonic baths. It is the room that best reveals a clinic’s rigour.

Does the staff room really matter?

A lot: a real room with fridge, microwave, table and lockers shows the clinic plans breaks and respects its staff. A corridor corner with a chair says the opposite. Also look for stretching posters or team information.

How do you read the atmosphere?

Observe how employees talk to each other and to the dentists, whether people are introduced to you, whether faces are relaxed or tense, whether anyone is running. Listen to the tone at the front desk. A team doing well is noticeable in thirty seconds.

Which practical details should you check?

Parking (free, close), public transit access, neighbourhood safety in the evening, changing room and lockers, a possible shower, distance from home at the real commuting time. These details weigh every day for years.

Can I ask employees questions during the visit?

Yes, briefly: « How long have you been here? », « What do you like most? », « What would you change? ». Spontaneous answers, and especially glances, say a lot. Stay discreet and respectful of their work.

What if the clinic is under construction or opening?

Visit the site or the plans, ask the opening date, the equipment ordered and the banner’s existing clinic to see the formula in action. Go Dentiste shows Valleyfield to candidates for Vaudreuil-Dorion and Saint-Zotique.

Which signs should make you walk away?

Neglected sterilization, visibly defective equipment, no staff room, employees avoiding your eyes, management rushing the visit, or inconsistency between what you were told at the interview and what you see. One of these signs deserves thought; two, a refusal. See open positions at Go Dentiste.
