Dental hygienist salary in Quebec: 10 questions

Salary is the first question dental hygienists ask before choosing a clinic. Here are Quebec’s official figures, what moves the hourly rate and how to compare one offer with another.

How much does a dental hygienist earn in Quebec?

According to the Quebec government’s labour market information (2023-2025 average), dental hygienists earn from about $31 an hour (entry level) to $50.50 (experienced), with a median of $40 an hour. Full-time, that is roughly $60,000 to $100,000 a year depending on experience and hours. Clinics recruiting in Montérégie are often in the upper part of the range. See the hygienist position at Go Dentiste.

What is the starting salary of a dental hygienist?

A new graduate usually starts near the bottom of the provincial scale, about $31 to $35 an hour, then progresses quickly during the first three years. Clinics facing shortages sometimes offer a higher starting rate, a signing bonus or a review after three to six months. Always ask about the raise schedule before signing.

Is pay higher in Montreal than in the suburbs or regions?

Not necessarily. Provincial data show modest gaps between regions, and the hygienist shortage affects all of Quebec, pushing rates up everywhere. In the suburbs (Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Beauharnois-Salaberry), the cost of living and parking are lower than in Montreal, which increases real income. Compare the hourly rate net of commuting costs.

Is the job outlook good for hygienists?

Yes: the Quebec government rates the 2025-2029 outlook as « very good » for the whole province, with about 6,000 jobs in 2024. In other words, hygienists get to choose their clinic, and employers must stand out on conditions, not just pay.

What factors change a hygienist’s hourly rate?

Experience, autonomy (procedures performed without a prescription since Bill 29), evening or weekend shifts, versatility (X-rays, periodontics, whitening), bilingualism and region. In Valleyfield, a clinic open 7 days a week like Go Dentiste can also offer guaranteed hours, which matters as much as the rate.

Is a hygienist paid by the hour or on a percentage?

In Quebec, the vast majority of hygienists are hourly employees. Some clinics offer a percentage of production or a bonus on targets, but that model shifts the risk to the employee. If you are offered a percentage, ask for the position’s production history and the minimum guaranteed hourly rate.

How do you negotiate a dental hygienist salary?

Bring the official figures (median $40 an hour), your years of experience, your specific skills and two or three comparable offers. Also negotiate what is not the rate: guaranteed hours, schedule, paid training, insurance, a salary review on a fixed date. Our guide Negotiating your salary in a dental clinic explains the method.

Are there premiums for evening and weekend shifts?

The law does not require any premium for evenings or weekends, only the 50% overtime premium beyond 40 hours a week. Many clinics open on Saturdays and Sundays do offer a premium or an enhanced rate for those shifts, though. Ask directly: it is a practice, not an obligation.

Does a hygienist’s salary increase with the years?

Yes, especially during the first five years. The gap between the bottom ($31) and the top ($50.50) of the provincial scale is mostly explained by experience and responsibilities (training new staff, coordination, periodontics). A serious clinic plans an annual review; ask how it is calculated.

How do you compare two hygienist job offers?

Compare real annual income: hourly rate × guaranteed hours, plus premiums, insurance, group RRSP, staff dental care, paid training, uniforms and parking. Add commuting time and schedule stability. An offer at $42 with 32 guaranteed hours can be worth less than an offer at $40 with 37.5 hours and benefits.
