Digital equipment in a dental clinic: what it changes for the team

A fully digital clinic changes the whole team’s daily life: fewer chemicals, fewer redos, more precision. Here is what to look at during a visit.

What is a « digital » dental clinic?

A clinic where radiography, records, impressions (intraoral scanner), photography and often treatment planning are computerized and connected. Paper and film disappear, data flows between the treatment room, the front desk and the labs.

What are the advantages for dental assistants?

No more developing baths and the associated chemicals, instant X-rays, optical impressions without paste or patient gagging, fewer redos, and better-planned trays thanks to the digital record. The work becomes cleaner and more predictable.

And for hygienists?

Immediate access to X-rays and the patient’s history, an intraoral camera to show problems to the patient (which improves treatment acceptance), computerized periodontal charting and faster documentation, so more time for the patient and less data entry after the shift.

What does digital change for the front desk?

Online booking, automatic text confirmations, electronic billing to insurers and the Canadian Dental Care Plan, records accessible to all clinics of the banner. Fewer repetitive calls, more time for welcoming patients.

Does digital require special training?

Initial training of a few days for each tool, then practice. Clinics that invest in equipment generally plan training with the supplier. Ask who trains the team and whether training hours are paid (they must be if the employer requires them).

Does digital improve ergonomics?

Yes when properly installed: screens in the working axis, light sensors, optical impressions without awkward postures. Badly installed (screen behind the operator), it creates neck twisting; the OHDQ documents this risk. Observe screen placement during your visit.

Are new clinics always digital?

Almost always, because it is easier to install digital during construction. Go Dentiste equipped its clinics with digital and panoramic X-rays, mechanized endodontics and implantology from opening day, in Valleyfield as in Vaudreuil-Dorion.

What happens during a computer outage?

A serious clinic has automatic backups, fast technical support and a continuity plan (printed daily agenda, temporary manual procedures). Ask how the last outage was handled: the answer reveals the level of organization.

Does digital protect patient information?

It must: Law 25 imposes security measures, a person responsible for the protection of personal information and access management. Each employee has her own access and consults only the necessary records. Confidentiality training is part of good onboarding.

How do you assess a clinic’s technology level at the interview?

Ask the installation year of the equipment, whether there is an intraoral scanner, a panoramic unit, intraoral cameras, recent management software and online booking. Visit a treatment room. Go Dentiste’s treatment rooms can be visited gladly.
