Foreign-trained professionals: recognition and equivalences in dentistry in Quebec
Many dental professionals arrive in Quebec with a foreign diploma. Here are the steps for each profession and how to work in a clinic during the process.

Can a foreign-trained dental hygienist work in Quebec?
Yes, after an equivalence application with the Ordre des hygiénistes dentaires du Québec, which compares the training received with the Quebec DEC, requires upgrading or an exam if needed, and verifies French proficiency. Graduates from other Canadian provinces benefit from a streamlined process.
And a dental assistant?
Since the title is not regulated in Quebec, no official recognition is required to assist chairside: a clinic can hire you based on your experience. To take X-rays, however, training recognized in Quebec is necessary. Having your diploma assessed (comparative evaluation by the Ministry of Immigration) makes hiring easier.
How does a foreign dentist obtain a licence?
Through the National Dental Examining Board of Canada’s equivalency process (assessment of fundamental knowledge, then clinical judgment and clinical skills exams) or a university qualifying program, followed by registration with the Ordre des dentistes du Québec with proof of French proficiency.
How long does the process take?
From a few months (hygienists from other provinces) to two to four years (dentists from countries without agreements), depending on the profession, the country of training and exam availability. Start the steps before arriving in Quebec if possible: several can be done remotely.
Is French mandatory?
Yes, for any licence to practise from a professional order in Quebec: a diploma from French-language studies in Quebec, or passing the Office québécois de la langue française exam. A temporary or restrictive permit can sometimes be granted while you pass the exam.
Can I work in a clinic during the process?
Often, yes: as a dental assistant, in sterilization, at the front desk or as a coordinator, depending on your skills. It is an excellent way to learn professional French, get to know the software and Quebec plans (RAMQ, CDCP) and become known to dentists.
Do clinics support foreign-trained professionals?
Increasingly, given the shortage: some pay for upgrading, adjust schedules for exams or offer an evolving position (assistant first, hygienist later). Ask openly at the interview; a clinic with multicultural teams, like in the Vaudreuil-Dorion area, understands these paths.
Where can you find official information?
From each order (OHDQ, ODQ, Ordre des denturologistes), the National Dental Examining Board for dentists, the Ministry of Immigration for the comparative evaluation of studies, and Qualifications Québec for free support in skills recognition.
Are the fees high?
They vary: a few hundred dollars for a hygienist equivalence, several thousand for NDEB exams. Loan programs for recognition of prior learning exist, and some clinics advance part of the fees in exchange for a commitment of duration, which must be written and reasonable.
How do you present your background to a Quebec employer?
With a French resume highlighting years of practice, procedures mastered, training taken in Quebec and the progress of your recognition. State clearly what you can do right now and what will come with the licence. See open positions at Go Dentiste.
