Working in two dental clinics: advantages and organization

Many dental professionals split their week between two clinics. Here are the rules, the pitfalls and why two clinics of the same banner simplify everything.

Is it common to work in two clinics?

Yes, especially among hygienists (two or three days in each) and percentage dentists. It lets you complete a schedule, vary environments and reduce dependence on a single employer. It is rarer for receptionists, whose role requires continuous presence.

Is overtime calculated across both jobs?

No: the 50% premium beyond 40 hours is calculated per employer. You can therefore work 30 hours in each clinic without overtime. Conversely, you cannot claim the premium by adding the two together.

What about the non-competition clause with two clinics?

Read it before accepting a second job: some clinics prohibit working for a competitor within a given radius during employment. An exclusivity clause during employment is easier to enforce than a post-employment clause; ask for a written exception if necessary.

How do you handle vacation, holidays and benefits?

Each employer calculates your vacation (4% or 6%) and holiday indemnities separately. Group insurance depends on each clinic’s hours threshold; often, neither gives access part-time. That is the main drawback of combining.

What are the logistical pitfalls?

Two software systems, two sets of protocols, two uniforms, two managers, schedules to coordinate and the risk of being the adjustment variable for both. Set clear days and have them written into each contract.

Are two clinics of the same banner simpler?

Much: one employer, one software, the same protocols, one management, one calculation of vacation and overtime, and access to benefits on total hours. Go Dentiste’s dentists and several employees already split their week between Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion.

What distance between the two clinics is reasonable?

Under 30 minutes avoids fatigue and even allows switching clinics during the day in an emergency. Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion are about 25 minutes apart; Saint-Zotique sits between the two.

Does combining help your career?

It broadens experience and network, and in a banner it opens coordination roles between clinics and participation in openings. Long term, most professionals settle on one employer that meets their needs.

How does a dentist organize two clinics?

By contract: fixed days in each, rules on patients and emergencies, and checking non-competition clauses. In a banner, alternation is planned and patients can be seen in either with the same record. See Dentist jobs.

How do you ask for a schedule across two clinics?

Specify your desired days per clinic, your constraints and the intended duration. A growing banner values these mobile profiles; it needs them for its openings. See open positions at Go Dentiste.
