How an infected wisdom tooth is treated
The dentist examines the area, cleans and rinses under the gum, then takes an X-ray to see the position of the wisdom tooth.
Depending on the case, the dentist first relieves the infection, then plans the extraction once the inflammation has gone down, or refers you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon if the tooth is deeply impacted. An antibiotic may be prescribed if the infection is spreading.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: painful wisdom tooth
What is pericoronitis?
It is an infection of the gum that partly covers a tooth that is coming in, most often a lower wisdom tooth. Debris and bacteria build up under this flap of gum.
Does an infected wisdom tooth need to be removed?
Not always, but an infection that keeps coming back is often a reason to extract it. The dentist explains the options after the exam and X-ray.
Can the tooth be extracted during the infection?
It depends on the infection and the position of the tooth. Often, the infection is relieved first and the extraction is planned afterwards.
Why do I have trouble opening my mouth?
The inflammation can spread to the jaw muscles. This is a sign to take seriously: get seen quickly, and go to the hospital if you also have trouble swallowing or breathing.
