01In brief
Severe toothache at night: what should I do?
Get it seen as soon as we open
A severe toothache that gets worse at night often comes from an inflamed or infected tooth nerve: when you lie down, pressure builds inside the tooth. In the meantime, keep your head raised, put something cold on your cheek and ask your pharmacist or Info-Santé 811 for advice on a pain reliever. Book online 24/7, or call the Go Dentiste clinic in Valleyfield at 514-533-3368 from 8 a.m. Monday to Thursday (9 a.m. Friday to Sunday) to be seen that day, subject to availability.

What to avoid
- Putting aspirin or a pill directly on the gum (it can burn)
- Taking more than the recommended dose of a pain reliever, or combining pain relievers without advice
- Putting heat on your cheek
- Taking an old antibiotic you found at home

How the dentist finds the tooth and eases the pain
When you arrive, the dentist looks for the tooth causing the pain: exam, cold and tapping tests, digital X-ray. Night-time pain often comes from the pulp, which is the nerve of the tooth.
Depending on the case, relief comes from removing the inflamed part and starting a root canal, a soothing temporary dressing, a filling if the cause is a cavity, or an extraction if the tooth cannot be kept. The plan and costs are explained before starting.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: severe toothache at night in Valleyfield
Why does my tooth hurt more at night?
When you lie down, more blood flows to your head and pressure rises in a tooth with an inflamed nerve. There are also fewer distractions. Pain that wakes you up should be checked quickly.
The pain was gone by morning: should I still come in?
Yes. Intense pain that suddenly disappears can mean the tooth’s nerve is dying; the infection can then spread without pain. Book an appointment for an exam.
Can I book in the middle of the night?
Yes. Online booking is available 24/7. When the clinic is closed, the website also lets you leave your number so we can call you back when we open.
Who can I talk to at night if I need advice?
Info-Santé 811 answers 24/7 in Quebec, and a pharmacist can advise you on pain relievers. If you have major swelling, fever or trouble breathing, go to the hospital emergency room.
