How a crack is found and treated
Cracks are sometimes invisible to the naked eye and even on X-rays. The dentist uses bite and sensitivity tests, with good lighting, to find the tooth involved.
Depending on how deep it goes, the dentist may suggest a filling, a crown that holds the tooth together, a root canal if the nerve is affected, or an extraction if the tooth is split down to the root. The options and costs are explained before starting.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: cracked tooth in Valleyfield
Why doesn’t the crack show up on the X-ray?
A fine crack often runs in a direction the X-ray does not show. The diagnosis also relies on the exam and bite tests.
Can a cracked tooth heal on its own?
No. Enamel does not repair itself like bone. Treatment aims to stop the crack from spreading.
Can teeth grinding crack a tooth?
Yes, grinding (bruxism) is a common cause. A night guard worn while you sleep can protect your teeth.
Why does it hurt mostly when I release my bite?
When you release your bite, the two sides of the crack snap back together and irritate the nerve. This is a typical sign of a cracked tooth.
