Cost of living and housing in Vaudreuil-Soulanges and Valleyfield
The same salary is not worth the same thing in Montreal, Vaudreuil and Valleyfield. Here are the region’s main expense items and what a dental clinic income allows.

Is housing more affordable than in Montreal?
Yes, clearly for buying: Valleyfield and Beauharnois offer some of the most accessible homes and apartments in the greater region, Vaudreuil-Dorion and Saint-Lazare sit in between, Hudson and the waterfront are pricier. Rents have risen everywhere but remain below the island’s. Check Institut de la statistique du Québec data and real estate sites for current figures.
What does a hygienist’s salary allow in the region?
With a provincial median of $40 an hour (about $75,000 a year full-time), a hygienist can aim to buy a property in Valleyfield or Saint-Zotique, alone or as a couple, which is difficult in Montreal. See Dental hygienist salary.
And an assistant’s or receptionist’s salary?
With $25 an hour (about $47,000 full-time), rental housing remains accessible in Valleyfield and the villages, and buying is possible as a couple. Free parking and no transit fares or traffic improve the monthly budget.
Are municipal taxes high?
They vary by municipality and property value; growing towns invest in infrastructure. Compare the real tax bill before buying; municipalities publish their rates. An informed buyer builds taxes into the monthly cost.
How much does transport cost?
A car is almost essential: fuel, insurance, maintenance. Working less than 15 minutes from home cuts this item by several thousand dollars a year compared with commuting to Montreal. The exo train is an option from Vaudreuil, Pincourt and Hudson. See Commuting.
And childcare?
Subsidized spots (CPEs, reduced-contribution daycares) cost the same daily rate everywhere in Quebec; private daycares are often slightly cheaper in the suburbs. Availability is the real issue; register early.
Are groceries and services cheaper?
Little difference for groceries (same chains), slightly less for services (restaurants, private daycares, maintenance), and much less for parking and car insurance in some municipalities. The main gain remains housing and transport.
Is there help to settle in?
Some municipalities offer home ownership or renovation programs; the federal first-time buyer programs and the Home Buyers’ Plan (RRSP) apply. Some clinics offer a signing bonus that helps with moving; ask.
How do you compare two offers taking the cost of living into account?
Calculate net income after housing, transport and childcare for each scenario (Montreal versus suburbs), rather than the hourly rate alone. A job paying $2 less an hour but 15 minutes from home, with no parking to pay, often leaves more money at the end of the month.
