01In brief

My child fell on their teeth: what should I do?

Get it seen today

After a fall on the mouth, first check that your child has no signs of a head injury (loss of consciousness, vomiting, unusual drowsiness); if they do, go to the hospital emergency room. Otherwise, rinse the mouth with cold water, put something cold on the lip and call the Go Dentiste clinic in Valleyfield at 514-533-3368 for an exam the same day, subject to availability. A baby tooth that is knocked out is not put back in; a permanent tooth is, as quickly as possible. For children under 10, the emergency exam is covered by RAMQ.

02What to do now

What to do after the fall

  1. Comfort and lookCalm your child, rinse with cold water and look for broken, moved or missing teeth.
  2. Cold on the lipA cold compress or a wrapped ice cube limits swelling. Press a gauze on a cut lip for 10 minutes.
  3. Permanent tooth knocked out?Hold it by the crown, put it back in place or keep it in milk, and come in right away.
  4. Call the clinicAt 514-533-3368. Bring your child’s health insurance card and any piece of tooth you found.

What to avoid

  • Putting a baby tooth back in
  • Pulling on a baby tooth pushed into the gum
  • Giving hard foods the same day
  • Waiting because your child isn’t complaining

Warning signs: Go to the hospital emergency room or call 911 if your child lost consciousness, is vomiting, is confused or unusually drowsy, is bleeding heavily or has a deep wound on the face or chin.

How your child is examined and treated

The dentist examines the teeth, gum, lips and jaw and, if needed, takes an X-ray suited to children.

For a baby tooth, the goal is to protect the permanent tooth forming underneath: the tooth is monitored, a chip is smoothed or, sometimes, the tooth is removed. For a permanent tooth, the tooth is repositioned and stabilized if needed. The approach is gentle, and each step is explained to the child and the parent.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions: child fell on their teeth

Should a baby tooth be put back in?

No. A knocked-out baby tooth is not put back in, so the permanent tooth forming underneath is not damaged. Keep it anyway and have your child examined.

My child’s tooth turned grey after the fall: is it serious?

A change in colour can appear a few days or weeks after a blow; it means the nerve was affected. Book a check-up: sometimes the tooth recovers, sometimes treatment is needed.

Is it covered by RAMQ?

For children under 10, the emergency exam and several dental treatments are covered by RAMQ. Bring your child’s health insurance card.

My child is very scared: how does it work?

The team takes the time to explain in simple words, goes at your child’s pace, and you can stay close by. In an emergency, we treat what hurts first.
