01In brief

Tooth knocked out: what should I do?

Very urgent: every minute counts

A permanent tooth knocked out of the mouth is an immediate emergency: it has a much better chance of being saved if it is put back quickly, ideally within minutes and no later than one hour. Hold it by the crown (the white part) without touching the root, rinse it for a few seconds if it is dirty, put it back in its socket if you can or keep it in milk, and call the Go Dentiste clinic in Valleyfield right away at 514-533-3368. A baby tooth is never put back in.

02What to do now

What to do right away

  1. Hold the tooth by the crownNever by the root: the cells that help the tooth reattach are fragile.
  2. Rinse it briefly if it is dirtyA few seconds in milk or under cold water, without scrubbing, without soap, without wiping it.
  3. Put it back in place if you canFacing the right way, pushing gently, then bite on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in milk, or inside the cheek for a conscious adult.
  4. Come in right awayCall the clinic on the way at 514-533-3368. If the clinic is closed, go to the hospital emergency room.

What to avoid

  • Touching or scraping the root
  • Letting the tooth dry out in a tissue
  • Keeping it in tap water
  • Putting a baby tooth back in

Warning signs: Go to the hospital emergency room first or call 911 if there is loss of consciousness, vomiting, confusion, heavy bleeding or a serious facial injury. Bring the tooth with you, in milk.

How a knocked-out tooth is put back in place

The dentist cleans the area, repositions the tooth if needed, checks its position with an X-ray and stabilizes it with a flexible splint bonded to the neighbouring teeth, usually for about two weeks.

Depending on how long the tooth was out of the mouth and the person’s age, a root canal may be needed in the following weeks. Check-ups are planned over several months to monitor healing.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions: knocked-out tooth in Valleyfield

How much time do I have to save a knocked-out tooth?

As little as possible. A tooth put back within minutes has the best chance of reattaching. After an hour out of the mouth, especially if it has dried out, the chances drop sharply.

What should I carry the tooth in?

In milk, ideally. Otherwise, in the mouth against the cheek (conscious adult only) or in a small container with a little saliva. Avoid tap water and never let it dry out.

Should a baby tooth be put back in?

No. A baby tooth is not put back in, because this can damage the permanent tooth forming underneath. Still have the child examined quickly.

Will the replanted tooth last?

It depends on how long it was out of the mouth, how it was kept and the person’s age. The dentist provides follow-up and explains your options if the tooth does not reattach.
