01In brief
Broken tooth: what should I do now?
Get it seen quickly
A broken tooth needs to be checked quickly, even if it does not hurt: the break can reach the nerve, and the tooth becomes weaker. Keep the piece in milk or a little saliva, rinse your mouth with lukewarm water and avoid chewing on that side. Call the Go Dentiste clinic in Valleyfield at 514-533-3368: if the tooth hurts a lot, bleeds from the centre or was broken by a blow, ask to be seen the same day, subject to availability.

How a broken tooth is repaired
The dentist assesses how deep the break goes with an exam and an X-ray. A small chip is often repaired with tooth-coloured composite resin. A larger break may need a filling or a crown.
If the nerve is exposed, a root canal may be needed before the tooth is rebuilt. If you kept the piece, bring it with you. The options and costs are explained before starting.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: broken tooth in Valleyfield
My broken tooth doesn’t hurt: is it urgent?
It’s less pressing, but the tooth should be checked in the next few days. A break that doesn’t hurt can hide a crack that is getting worse or a cavity that is weakening the tooth.
Can the broken piece be bonded back on?
Sometimes, if the piece is intact and was kept in milk or saliva. The dentist decides after the exam; otherwise, the tooth is rebuilt with a restorative material.
What should I do if my broken tooth is cutting my tongue?
Cover the edge with dental wax or sugar-free gum, then call the clinic. The dentist can smooth the edge until the repair is done.
Does a broken baby tooth need to be seen?
Yes, especially after a fall. The dentist checks the tooth, the gum and the permanent tooth underneath. RAMQ covers the emergency exam for children under 10.
