Custom sports mouthguards in Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion

A custom sports mouthguard is a protective appliance made from an impression of your teeth, worn during contact sports to absorb impacts and prevent broken, displaced or knocked-out teeth, cut lips and jaw injuries. It is thinner, more comfortable and more protective than a boil-and-bite guard.

Custom sports mouthguard: what you need to know

Dental injuries are among the most common sports injuries, and they are expensive: a knocked-out front tooth can mean decades of crowns, root canals and implants. A mouthguard absorbs and spreads the force of a puck, a ball, an elbow or a fall, and protects the teeth, the lips and the jaw. It should be worn for hockey, football, rugby, soccer, basketball, martial arts, skateboarding and any activity with a risk of impact.

At Go Dentiste, mouthguards are made from an impression of your child’s or your own teeth, in the thickness adapted to the sport, at our Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion clinics. They fit precisely, stay in place without clenching and make it easy to breathe and talk, which is why athletes actually wear them.

Who needs a sports mouthguard?

  • Children and teens playing hockey, ringette, football, soccer, basketball or lacrosse
  • Adults in contact sports, martial arts, boxing or recreational leagues
  • Athletes wearing braces, to protect the lips and cheeks from the brackets
  • Patients with veneers, crowns, implants or a previous dental injury
  • Skateboarders, mountain bikers, skiers and anyone at risk of a fall on the face

How the treatment works, step by step

1. Assessment

The dentist checks the teeth, the bite and any orthodontic appliance, and discusses the sport and the level of contact.

2. Impression

An impression or a digital scan of the upper teeth (and the lower ones if braces are present) is taken in a few minutes.

3. Fabrication

The guard is pressure-formed on a model of your teeth in one or more layers, in the chosen thickness and colour.

4. Delivery and adjustment

The fit is checked, the edges are trimmed and the bite is adjusted for comfort.

5. Instructions

You learn how to clean and store the guard and when to replace it.

Benefits

  • Reduces the risk of broken, displaced or knocked-out teeth
  • Protects the lips, cheeks and tongue from cuts
  • Precise fit: stays in place, easy breathing and speech
  • Custom colours and thickness for each sport
  • Far less costly than repairing a dental injury

After the treatment: advice

  • Rinse the guard with cool water after each use and brush it with a soft brush
  • Store it in a ventilated case; never leave it in a hot car or in the sun
  • Do not chew on it or trim it yourself
  • Bring it to your check-ups to have the fit verified, especially for growing children
  • Replace it when it becomes loose, thin or damaged, or after a significant impact

Alternatives and options

Boil-and-bite mouthguards from sporting goods stores offer some protection but are bulky, fit loosely and are often removed or chewed by young players. Stock guards, which are not moulded at all, are the least protective. For athletes with braces, only a custom guard designed for orthodontic appliances fits properly.

Frequently asked questions about sports mouthguard

Is a custom mouthguard really better?

Yes. It is made on a model of your teeth, so it covers them fully, stays in place without clenching and can be made thicker where impacts are expected. Fit is what determines protection and whether the athlete keeps it in.

My child wears braces: can they have a custom mouthguard?

Yes. A guard designed for braces leaves room for the brackets and tooth movement, and protects the lips from the appliances. It may need to be remade during treatment.

How often should it be replaced?

Every season or two for a growing child, since the teeth and jaws change, and when it becomes loose, thin or torn for an adult.

Does the mouthguard make it hard to breathe or talk?

A custom guard is thin and fitted to the teeth, so breathing and speech are barely affected, unlike a bulky boil-and-bite guard.

Is it covered by insurance?

Some plans cover sports mouthguards, particularly for children. We can check with a pre-determination.

Does a mouthguard protect against concussions?

It protects the teeth, lips and jaw and may reduce some jaw-related impacts, but there is no strong evidence that it prevents concussions. It remains essential protection for the mouth.
