Braces in Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion
Braces are fixed orthodontic appliances made of brackets bonded to the teeth and connected by a wire that applies gentle, continuous pressure to move the teeth and correct the bite. They treat crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites and crossbites in children, teens and adults.

Braces (orthodontic appliances): what you need to know
Braces remain the most versatile orthodontic tool: they can move teeth in every direction, correct jaw relationships in growing children and handle cases that aligners cannot. Modern brackets are smaller than ever, and ceramic versions blend with the teeth for adults who want a discreet option.
At Go Dentiste, orthodontic assessments start at age 7, when the first permanent molars and incisors are in, so that growth problems can be intercepted early. Treatment with braces is offered at our Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion clinics, with adjustments every four to eight weeks, and complex cases are coordinated with an orthodontist.

Signs that an orthodontic assessment is worthwhile
- Crowded, overlapping or crooked teeth
- Teeth that do not meet properly when biting (overbite, underbite, open bite, crossbite)
- Difficulty chewing, mouth breathing or thumb sucking past age 5
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Jaw that shifts or clicks, or teeth that wear unevenly
- Any child around age 7, for a first screening
How the treatment works, step by step
1. Orthodontic assessment
The dentist examines the teeth and jaws, takes photos, a panoramic X-ray and, if needed, impressions, then explains the treatment options and duration.
2. Preparation
Cleaning and any needed fillings are done first; spacers may be placed between the molars a week before the bands.
3. Placing the braces
The brackets are bonded to the teeth and the first wire is inserted in a 60- to 90-minute visit.
4. Regular adjustments
Every four to eight weeks, the wire is changed or adjusted and elastics may be added to correct the bite.
5. Removing the braces
Once the teeth and bite are corrected, the brackets are removed and the enamel is polished.
6. Retention
A bonded wire behind the front teeth and/or a removable retainer keep the result stable.
Benefits
- Corrects the widest range of alignment and bite problems
- Effective for growing children as well as adults
- Does not depend on the patient remembering to wear trays
- Ceramic option for a discreet appearance
- Improves chewing, hygiene and the long-term health of the teeth and gums
After the treatment: advice
- Brush after every meal with a soft brush and use floss threaders or interdental brushes daily
- Avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods (caramel, gum, nuts, ice) that break brackets
- Use orthodontic wax on any bracket that rubs the cheek or lip
- Take a pain reliever for the first two or three days after an adjustment if needed
- Wear elastics exactly as prescribed; skipping them prolongs the treatment
Alternatives and options
Clear aligners are an alternative for mild to moderate cases in patients who can commit to wearing the trays 20 to 22 hours a day. Interceptive appliances (expanders, space maintainers) can reduce or avoid the need for braces in growing children. Cosmetic solutions such as veneers do not move the teeth but can improve the appearance of slightly irregular front teeth.

Frequently asked questions about braces
At what age should a child see a dentist for braces?
A first orthodontic screening is recommended around age 7. Most treatments with braces start between 11 and 14, once most permanent teeth have erupted, but some problems are better intercepted earlier.
Do braces hurt?
The teeth are sore for two to three days after the braces are placed and after each adjustment. The discomfort is manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods. Brackets can also rub the cheeks at first; wax helps.
How long does treatment with braces take?
Twelve to thirty months, depending on the complexity of the case and how well instructions (elastics, hygiene, appointments) are followed.
Are ceramic braces as effective as metal ones?
Yes. Ceramic brackets work the same way and are less visible; they are slightly larger and more fragile, so they are usually placed on the upper front teeth.
What if a bracket comes off?
Call the clinic. A loose bracket is not an emergency, but it should be rebonded within a few days so the treatment stays on schedule.
Can adults get braces?
Absolutely. There is no age limit; healthy teeth and gums are what matter. Many adults choose ceramic braces or clear aligners for discretion.
