Dental exam and teeth cleaning in Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion

A dental exam and cleaning is the routine visit recommended every six to twelve months: the hygienist removes plaque and tartar (scaling), polishes the teeth, then the dentist examines the teeth, gums and soft tissues of the mouth to catch any problem before it gets worse.

Dental exam and cleaning: what you need to know

A professional teeth cleaning does what a toothbrush and floss cannot: it removes the hardened tartar that builds up below the gumline and between the teeth. Combined with the dentist’s exam, it catches an early cavity, an inflamed gum or an old filling that is starting to leak at a stage where treatment is still simple and inexpensive.

At Go Dentiste, a hygiene visit usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes. It includes scaling, polishing, a fluoride application when useful, updated digital X-rays based on your risk profile and a complete exam by the dentist. Our Valleyfield clinic is open until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and on weekends, and our Vaudreuil-Dorion clinic Monday to Friday, which makes it easy to book the whole family.

How often do you need a teeth cleaning?

  • Every six months for most adults and children
  • Every three or four months if you have a history of gum disease
  • Every twelve months only if your dentist considers your cavity risk very low
  • More often during orthodontic treatment, because braces trap plaque
  • As soon as you notice bleeding gums, persistent bad breath or new sensitivity

How the treatment works, step by step

1. Updating your file

We review your health, your medications and anything that has changed since your last visit, because some conditions (diabetes, pregnancy, blood thinners) influence your care.

2. Scaling

The hygienist removes plaque and tartar with an ultrasonic scaler and fine hand instruments, above and below the gumline.

3. Polishing

A mildly abrasive paste removes surface stains (coffee, tea, wine, tobacco) and smooths the enamel to slow down new plaque.

4. Digital X-rays

Depending on your risk and the date of your last images, low-dose bitewing X-rays show cavities between the teeth and the supporting bone.

5. Exam by the dentist

The dentist checks every tooth, existing restorations, the gums, your bite and jaw joint, and performs an oral cancer screening.

6. Plan and advice

You leave with a clear picture of your oral health, personalized recommendations and, if needed, a treatment plan with a cost estimate.

Benefits

  • Prevents cavities and gingivitis before they need heavier treatment
  • Early screening for oral cancer and soft-tissue lesions
  • Fresher breath and visibly cleaner teeth
  • Monitoring of wear, grinding and the condition of existing restorations
  • Lower total cost of dental care over the long term

After the treatment: advice

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss every day, ideally in the evening
  • If fluoride was applied, wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking
  • Mild gum tenderness for 24 hours is normal after a deeper scaling
  • Note the date of your next visit: regularity makes all the difference

Alternatives and options

There is no substitute for a professional cleaning: electric toothbrushes, water flossers and mouthwashes are excellent complements at home, but they do not remove tartar that has already formed. For patients with periodontitis, the routine cleaning is replaced by scaling and root planing followed by closer periodontal maintenance visits.

Frequently asked questions about dental exam and cleaning

Does a teeth cleaning hurt?

For most patients, no. Scaling can create a feeling of pressure or brief sensitivity when the gums are inflamed. Our hygienists adjust the power of their instruments and can apply a numbing gel on request.

Is teeth cleaning covered by the RAMQ?

No. The RAMQ covers certain treatments for children under 10 (exam, X-rays, fillings, extractions), but not cleaning or polishing. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and most private insurance plans do cover preventive care.

How long does a hygiene appointment take?

Plan on 45 to 60 minutes for an adult, a little less for a child. A first appointment with a complete exam and X-rays can take up to 75 minutes.

Why do my gums bleed during the cleaning?

Bleeding is a sign of inflammation (gingivitis) caused by plaque. It decreases quickly once the tartar is removed and daily hygiene improves. If it persists, a more thorough periodontal exam is recommended.

Do I need X-rays at every visit?

No. Frequency depends on your cavity risk and the condition of your gums: often every 12 to 24 months for a low-risk adult. Our digital sensors use a very low radiation dose.

Can the exam and cleaning be done the same day as another treatment?

Yes, whenever possible. If a filling or another treatment is needed, we try to schedule it in the same visit or soon after, at the clinic of your choice.
