Teeth whitening in Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion
Teeth whitening lightens the natural colour of the teeth with a peroxide-based gel, either in custom trays worn at home for 10 to 14 days or in a single in-office session. Supervised by a dentist, it is safe for the enamel and typically lightens teeth by several shades.
At a glance
| Duration | 10 to 14 days (take-home) or 60–90 minutes (in-office) |
| Shade improvement | Usually 2 to 8 shades depending on the starting colour |
| Sensitivity | Mild and temporary, reduced with a desensitizing gel |
| Result lasts | 1 to 3 years with touch-ups |
| Does not whiten | Fillings, crowns, veneers |
Offered in Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion, 7 days a week in Valleyfield and Monday to Friday in Vaudreuil-Dorion. Phone: 514-533-3368.
Teeth whitening: what you need to know
Teeth darken with age, coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and some medications. Professional whitening uses a concentration of carbamide or hydrogen peroxide that penetrates the enamel and breaks down the stains inside the tooth, which over-the-counter strips cannot do as effectively or as evenly.
At Go Dentiste, whitening always starts with an exam and a cleaning: cavities and gum inflammation must be treated first, and existing fillings, crowns or veneers will not change colour. Our dentists then recommend take-home trays, an in-office session or a combination, at our Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion clinics.

Is whitening right for you?
- Teeth that have yellowed with age or from coffee, tea, wine or tobacco
- Healthy teeth and gums, with no untreated cavities
- No crowns, veneers or large fillings on the front teeth (they will not whiten)
- Before a wedding, a graduation or a photo session, with a few weeks of lead time
- Before new veneers or a crown on a front tooth, so the shade can be matched to whiter teeth
How the treatment works, step by step
1. Exam and cleaning
The dentist checks for cavities, cracks and gum inflammation, and the hygienist removes tartar and surface stains so the gel works evenly.
2. Choosing the method
Take-home trays for gradual, controlled results, in-office for a faster start, or both, depending on your teeth and your timeline.
3. Impressions and trays
For the take-home option, custom trays are made from impressions so the gel stays on the teeth and off the gums.
4. Applying the gel
At home, the gel is worn in the trays for the recommended time each day; in the office, a stronger gel is applied in cycles for 60 to 90 minutes.
5. Shade check
The result is compared with the starting shade and the dentist adjusts the duration if needed.
6. Touch-ups
A short touch-up with the trays every 6 to 12 months maintains the result.
Benefits
- Brighter smile in days to weeks
- Safe for the enamel when supervised by a dentist
- Custom trays can be reused for touch-ups for years
- Non-invasive: no drilling, no anesthesia
- Often the first and most economical step of a smile makeover
After the treatment: advice
- Avoid staining foods and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine, curry, berries) for 48 hours after each session
- Use a desensitizing toothpaste if your teeth feel sensitive; it passes within a few days
- Keep your trays clean and store them in their case
- Maintain regular cleanings: stains build up on tartar first
- Plan a short touch-up every 6 to 12 months rather than a full new treatment
Alternatives and options
Composite bonding or veneers are the options for teeth that do not respond to whitening, such as those with tetracycline staining or a root-canal-treated front tooth that has darkened. Internal whitening can lighten a single dark tooth that has had a root canal. Whitening toothpastes remove surface stains only and do not change the colour of the tooth.

Frequently asked questions about teeth whitening
Does whitening damage the enamel?
No. Peroxide gels used under a dentist’s supervision at the recommended concentrations do not weaken the enamel. Temporary sensitivity is the main side effect and it resolves on its own.
How long does the result last?
One to three years, depending on your habits (coffee, tea, wine, tobacco). Occasional touch-ups with your custom trays extend it indefinitely.
Does whitening hurt?
Some patients feel brief, sharp sensitivity during or after the treatment. A desensitizing gel, shorter sessions or a lower concentration keep it manageable.
Why don’t my fillings whiten?
Composite, ceramic and other restorative materials do not react to peroxide. After whitening, a filling on a front tooth may need to be replaced to match the new shade; plan this with your dentist before starting.
In-office or take-home: which is more effective?
Both reach similar final results. In-office gives a faster start in one session; take-home trays give gradual, easily controlled results and can be reused. Many patients combine the two.
Is whitening covered by insurance?
No. Whitening is a cosmetic treatment and is not covered by private plans, the RAMQ or the CDCP.
