01In brief
At what age should a child be seen for orthodontics?
First evaluation around age 7
A first orthodontic evaluation is recommended around age 7, when the first permanent molars and incisors are in. In most cases, there is nothing to treat right away: we monitor growth and the eruption of the teeth. Some problems, like a crossbite or a significant lack of space, are however easier to correct early. At Go Dentiste, in Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion, no referral is needed for an evaluation: 514-533-3368.

02What to know
What to know before age 12
Orthodontics in children is often done in two stages: monitor first, then treat at the right time.
- Age 7, the time for a first opinionThe jaws are still growing: it’s the time to spot a discrepancy, a lack of space or a habit that is moving the teeth.
- Monitoring isn’t doing nothingThe dentist notes the position of the teeth at each exam and compares from one visit to the next, with X-rays as needed.
- Early treatment, if neededFor certain situations, like a crossbite, upper teeth that stick out a lot or the early loss of a baby tooth, a simple appliance may be offered sooner.
- Full treatment, laterBraces or aligners are most often placed once most of the permanent teeth are in, around ages 11 to 14.
Signs to watch for in your child
- The upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth
- The front teeth don’t touch when they close their mouth
- The upper teeth stick out a lot or the chin seems set back
- They still suck their thumb or a pacifier after age 4 or 5
- A baby tooth fell out or was removed well before the others
Good to know: RAMQ covers dental exams for children under 10, but not orthodontics. The cost of treatment is always given to you in writing before you start.

03Options
Three common scenarios after the evaluation
The dentist explains where your child stands, and why.
- All is well, we monitorThis is the most common case. The position of the teeth is reviewed at regular check-ups, without an appliance.
- A simple appliance, earlyFor a crossbite, a habit or a space to preserve, an appliance may be offered to guide growth.
- An orthodontist’s opinionA marked jaw discrepancy or a tooth that isn’t coming in: we refer you to an orthodontist and send them the X-rays.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: orthodontics for children
Should we wait until all the adult teeth are in?
No, not for the first evaluation. Full treatment often waits for the permanent teeth, but some problems are easier to spot and manage earlier.
Will my child need two treatments?
Not necessarily. Early treatment is only offered when it brings a clear benefit; otherwise, we wait for the right time for a single treatment.
Do appliances hurt children?
A feeling of pressure is common in the first few days after placement or an adjustment. It usually eases within a few days; the dentist explains how to relieve your child’s discomfort.
Does RAMQ pay for my child’s braces?
No. RAMQ covers many dental services before age 10, but orthodontics is excluded. Check your private insurance: many plans reimburse part of the cost.
My child still sucks their thumb: is it serious?
Before age 4 or 5, it’s common. If the habit continues when the permanent teeth come in, it can move the front teeth: mention it to the dentist at the next exam.
