01In brief

Crossbite: should it be corrected early?

Often worth correcting early in children

A crossbite is when some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth as you close your mouth, at the front or on the side. In children, it is often better to correct it early: the jaw may shift to one side to compensate, and the teeth can wear. In teens and adults, it can also be treated, with braces or sometimes aligners. Evaluation in Valleyfield or Vaudreuil-Dorion: 514-533-3368.

02What to know

What to know

Crossbite is one of the situations where the age of treatment matters.

  1. Anterior or posteriorOne or more front teeth behind the lower teeth (anterior), or side teeth that bite on the inside (posterior).
  2. A shift of the jawTo close properly, a child sometimes slides their jaw to one side. Over time, this shift can affect growth.
  3. A narrow palateA palate that is too narrow is a common cause of posterior crossbite. During growth, it can be widened with an appliance.
  4. Wear and gumsA front tooth in crossbite can wear abnormally and press on the gum of the lower tooth.

Signs to watch for

  • An upper front tooth sitting behind the lower teeth
  • The chin shifting to one side when the child closes their mouth
  • Upper side teeth biting inside the lower teeth
  • Visible wear on the edge of a front tooth
  • A receding gum on a lower front tooth

Good to know: A crossbite in a child aged 6 to 9 is a good reason to ask for an evaluation, without waiting for the teen years.

03Options

The options by age and type

The plan is set after the exam; some appliances are placed by an orthodontist.

  • Child: expansion applianceDuring growth, an appliance can widen the palate to correct a posterior crossbite.
  • A single tooth in crossbiteA front tooth caught behind the lower teeth can often be brought forward with a simple appliance or a few brackets.
  • Teen or adultBraces or, in some cases, aligners. If the palate is very narrow in an adult, an orthodontist’s opinion is recommended.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions: crossbite

Should a crossbite be treated in a young child?

Often, yes, especially if it makes the jaw shift. The palate is easier to widen during growth. The evaluation helps choose the right time.

Can a crossbite correct itself?

Rarely. A front tooth in crossbite or a narrow palate usually needs treatment.

Do aligners correct crossbite?

Some mild cases related to the position of the teeth, yes. A crossbite related to the width of the palate often calls for another type of appliance.

Does an expansion appliance hurt?

Pressure is often felt in the first few days. The dentist or orthodontist explains how to relieve the child’s discomfort.

And in adults?

The position of the teeth can be corrected with orthodontics. If the bone of the palate is involved, an approach with an orthodontist, and sometimes a surgeon, may be discussed.
