01In brief
How do you pay for orthodontic treatment?
Written costs before you start
Orthodontics is covered neither by RAMQ nor by the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). The main ways to pay for it are private dental insurance, often with a lifetime maximum specific to orthodontics, and the payment and financing options offered for larger treatments. The costs may also qualify for the medical expense tax credit. At Go Dentiste, the cost of each option is given to you in writing before you start: 514-533-3368.

- Two insurance plans? If your child is covered by both parents’ plans, coordination of benefits can increase the reimbursement.
- The tax creditDental care that isn’t purely cosmetic may qualify for the medical expense tax credit, federally and in Quebec. Keep your receipts.
What to ask the clinic
- The total written cost of each option
- What’s included: retainer, follow-up visits, replacing an aligner

Good to know: Tax rules change and depend on your situation: check with the Canada Revenue Agency, Revenu Québec or your accountant before counting on a tax credit.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: paying for orthodontics
Does RAMQ reimburse orthodontics?
No. RAMQ covers many dental services for children under 10, but orthodontics is excluded.
Does the CDCP cover braces or aligners?
No, not currently: the Canadian Dental Care Plan does not offer orthodontic services. Preventive and basic care remains covered depending on your eligibility.
How much will my insurance reimburse?
It depends on your plan: percentage, lifetime maximum, age limit. A pre-determination sent to the insurer before you start lets you know.
Does orthodontics qualify for a tax credit?
Dental care costs that aren’t purely cosmetic may qualify for the medical expense tax credit. Check your situation with the tax authorities or an accountant.
Can the cost change during treatment?
The cost written at the start is that of the plan you accepted. If a change is needed, we explain it and get your consent before continuing.
