01In brief

My retainer is broken or lost: what should I do?

Get it seen in the next few days

A broken, loose or lost retainer is usually not a medical emergency, but you shouldn’t wait weeks: teeth can start to shift within a few days, especially soon after treatment has ended. Keep the pieces, don’t glue anything back yourself, and call the clinic to have it repaired or replaced. At Go Dentiste, in Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion, call 514-533-3368; appointments are given subject to availability.

02What to know

What to do

The goal: protect the position of your teeth until your appointment.

  1. Keep the piecesBring the removable retainer or the loose wire: it can sometimes be rebonded or used as a model.
  2. Wear what still fitsIf a removable retainer is cracked but still fits, wear it at night in the meantime, unless it hurts or no longer snaps into place.
  3. Protect your cheek and tongueA wire that sticks out can be covered with orthodontic wax. Don’t cut it or pull on it.
  4. Call soonThe shorter the delay, the less time your teeth have to shift. Say how long the retainer has been broken or lost.

Call sooner if

  • The wire bonded behind your teeth has come loose on several teeth
  • A tooth seems to have already shifted
  • A wire is poking and hurting your cheek or tongue
  • Your treatment ended less than a year ago
  • The removable retainer no longer snaps into place

Good to know: A wire that pokes or a loose bracket during ongoing treatment? See our guide on wires and brackets that poke for what to do until your appointment.

03Options

Possible solutions

They depend on the type of retainer and the condition of your teeth.

  • Rebonding the wireA retainer wire that has come loose on one or two teeth can often be rebonded, if the teeth haven’t shifted.
  • Replacing the retainerA lost, broken or worn-out retainer is remade from a new impression. The cost is given to you beforehand.
  • Realigning, if neededIf the teeth have shifted, a short treatment, often with aligners, may be offered before a new retainer.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions: broken or lost retainer

How long can I wait before getting my retainer repaired?

As little as possible, ideally a few days. Teeth can start to shift quickly, especially in the year after treatment ends.

Can I glue my wire back myself?

No. Household glues aren’t made for the mouth and can fix the wire in the wrong place. Cover it with wax and call the clinic.

My treatment was done elsewhere: can you help?

Yes. Our general dentists can rebond or replace a retainer, even if the treatment was done at another clinic.

Do I have to wear my retainer for life?

Teeth tend to shift throughout life. Long-term wear, often only at night after a while, is the most reliable way to keep the result.

My removable retainer feels too tight: is that normal?

If you haven’t worn it for a while, it’s often a sign that your teeth have started to shift. Don’t force it: call the clinic.
