01In brief
Can you continue orthodontic treatment started elsewhere?
Assessed case by case
Yes, often. When you move or change clinics during treatment with braces or aligners, a dentist can take over after assessing how far along the treatment is. The key is to get your file (treatment plan, X-rays, notes) from the original clinic and not let too much time go by without follow-up. At Go Dentiste, our general dentists assess each case and tell you whether they can continue or whether an orthodontist is preferable: 514-533-3368.

02What to know
The steps of a transfer
A transfer takes some preparation: a few simple steps save time.
- Ask for your fileTreatment plan, X-rays, photos, notes and, for aligners, information on the system used. You are entitled to a copy of your file.
- Clarify paymentsAsk for a statement of account: what has been paid, what corresponds to the part already done, and what is still owing or refundable.
- Have the situation assessedThe dentist examines the state of the treatment, the appliances in place and the health of the teeth and gums before suggesting next steps.
- A written plan for what’s nextYou receive the estimated length and cost to finish the treatment, before anything is done.
What to bring to the first appointment
- Your original treatment plan, if you have it
- Your recent X-rays
- Your current aligners and the next ones, if applicable
- Your retainer, if it has already been made
- Your insurance card and receipts for payments made
Good to know: Aligners from a given system can’t always be continued as is at another clinic: a new plan may be needed. The dentist explains this after the evaluation.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: treatment started elsewhere
Does my former clinic have to give me my file?
You have the right to obtain a copy of your file. Make the request in writing; reasonable copying fees may apply.
Will I pay twice?
The cost to finish the treatment is given to you in writing after the evaluation. For the part already paid, check with your former clinic and your insurer.
Does my insurance carry over with the transfer?
Often, the lifetime maximum for orthodontics takes into account what has already been reimbursed. A pre-determination for the rest of the treatment lets you check.
Can my aligners be continued?
Sometimes. It depends on the system used and how far along treatment is. If not, a new plan is proposed based on the current position of the teeth.
My braces are hurting me while I wait for the transfer: what should I do?
Cover the part that pokes with orthodontic wax and call the clinic. An appointment can be given, subject to availability.
