01In brief
Is it too late to straighten your teeth as an adult?
Possible at any age, if the mouth is healthy
No. Teeth can be moved at any age, as long as the gums and bone supporting them are healthy. In adults, growth is complete: the position of the teeth can be corrected, but not the size of the jaws without surgery. Clear aligners are often offered for their discretion; braces remain an option for many situations. At Go Dentiste, no referral is needed for an evaluation, in Valleyfield and in Vaudreuil-Dorion: 514-533-3368.

02What to know
What’s different for adults
The principles are the same as for teens, but a few points need more attention.
- Gums firstGum disease must be stabilized before teeth are moved. More frequent cleanings may be suggested during treatment.
- Crowns, bridges and implantsAn implant doesn’t move, and a crown can make it harder for a bracket to stay on: they are taken into account in planning.
- Often targeted goalsMany adults aim for limited alignment of the front teeth, which is shorter than full treatment. The dentist tells you whether that’s realistic.
- Long-term retentionTeeth tend to shift throughout life: a retainer, worn as directed, protects the result.
Common reasons adults come in
- Teeth that have shifted over the years
- Relapse after treatment done in the teen years
- Crowded teeth that are hard to clean
- Space to prepare before an implant, a bridge or veneers
- Wear or abnormal contact between the upper and lower teeth
Good to know: Treatment only begins once the mouth is healthy: cavities treated, gums stable. That is what makes moving teeth safe.

03Options
The most common options for adults
The choice depends on the situation, your expectations and your work constraints.
- Clear alignersDiscreet and removable, often chosen by adults for mild to moderate cases. They need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day.
- Ceramic or metal bracesFixed, they suit a wider range of situations. Tooth-coloured ceramic is more discreet.
- Combined approachOrthodontics before an implant, a crown or veneers, or a referral to an orthodontist and a surgeon when the jaws are involved.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: orthodontics for adults
Is there an age limit?
No. What matters is the health of the gums and bone. Adults aged 50 or 60 can be treated if their mouth allows it.
Does treatment take longer for adults?
Often a little, because growth is complete. Limited alignment can still be done in a few months. The estimated length is included in the written plan.
My teeth shifted after my braces as a teen: what can I do?
It’s common when the retainer wasn’t worn. A new treatment, often shorter, is sometimes possible; the evaluation can confirm it.
Do aligners show at work?
Very little. They are clear; small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to help move the teeth.
Does my insurance cover adult orthodontics?
Some plans cover it only for children, others for adults too. We check your coverage and give you a written plan before you start.
