01In brief
How do you close a gap between teeth?
Not urgent · several options
A gap between the teeth, called a diastema, can be closed in several ways: by bringing the teeth together with orthodontics (aligners or braces), or by slightly widening the teeth with cosmetic composite bonding or veneers. The choice depends on the size of the gap, its cause and the shape of the teeth. First, the dentist checks that the gap isn’t caused by a gum problem. 02What to know
Where does the gap come from?
Knowing the cause helps choose a solution that lasts.
- Teeth that are narrow for the jawWhen the teeth are small compared to the arch, gaps appear naturally, often between several teeth.
- The lip frenumA thick, low frenum between the two upper front teeth can hold a gap open. It is assessed before the gap is closed.
- A missing toothA tooth that never came in or was lost leaves a space, and the neighbouring teeth tend to drift into it.
- Gums and habitsGum disease can make teeth drift, and so can a tongue that pushes against the teeth. These causes are treated first.
When to come in sooner
- A gap that appears or widens in adulthood
- Teeth that seem to be shifting or becoming loose
- Gums that bleed or are receding
- A gap that affects speech
- In a child, a gap that remains after the canines come in
Good to know: In children, a gap between the two upper front teeth is often normal and closes when the permanent canines come in. It is monitored before any treatment.

03Options
Three ways to close a gap
They can also be combined: the teeth are brought together, then their shape is corrected.
- Aligners or bracesThe teeth are brought together. This is the preferred option when there are several gaps or a bite problem. A retainer follows.
- Composite bondingThe dentist adds tooth-coloured resin to the sides to close a small gap, often in one visit, without moving the teeth.
- VeneersCustom shells bonded to the front of the teeth, when you also want to correct their shape or colour. They generally require reshaping the enamel.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: gap between teeth
Is a gap between the teeth a health problem?
Not necessarily. A gap that has been stable since childhood is often just cosmetic. A gap that appears or widens in adulthood, however, should be assessed.
Can aligners close a diastema?
Yes, in many cases. They bring the teeth together gradually; a retainer is then needed to keep the gap from reopening.
Is composite bonding a permanent solution?
It is durable, but it can stain or chip over time and need touch-ups. The dentist explains how to care for it.
Can the gap come back after treatment?
Yes, especially without a retainer. A retainer bonded behind the teeth is often suggested to keep the gap closed.
Does the lip frenum need to be cut?
Only in some cases, when the frenum prevents the gap from closing. The dentist explains this after the exam; it is not done routinely.
