01In brief
Is orthodontics needed before an implant or veneers?
Planned as part of the full treatment plan
Sometimes, yes. When a tooth has been missing for a long time, the neighbouring teeth have often drifted or tipped into the space: there is then no longer enough room for a well-proportioned implant or crown. Short preparatory orthodontics, with aligners or braces, can straighten those teeth and recreate the space. Before veneers, aligning the teeth often means less enamel needs to be reshaped. The dentist suggests it only if it is useful: 514-533-3368.

02What to know
Why align before restoring
Preparatory orthodontics aims for a simpler, longer-lasting and more natural result.
- Recreating spaceTeeth tipped toward an empty space can be straightened to make room for an implant, a bridge or a crown.
- Preserving enamelAligned teeth often need less reshaping for veneers or crowns.
- Easier cleaningWell-positioned teeth around an implant or crown are easier to clean, which helps protect the gums.
- A single planOrthodontics, the implant and the restorations are planned together, with the length and cost of each step.
Situations where it often comes up
- A tooth has been missing for several years
- The teeth next to a space have tipped
- An upper tooth has dropped down toward a space below
- Crowded teeth before veneers are placed
- A space too large or too small for a replacement tooth
Good to know: Preparatory orthodontics is often shorter than full treatment, because it targets only a few teeth. Its estimated length is included in the written plan.

03Options
The options by situation
The dentist presents the simplest option first.
- Restoring without orthodonticsIf the space and the position of the teeth allow it, the implant, crown or veneers can be done directly.
- Targeted orthodonticsAligners or braces on a few teeth, for a short period, to prepare the space before the restoration.
- With an orthodontistIf several teeth or the whole bite need correcting, we may refer you to an orthodontist, coordinated with our care.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: orthodontics before an implant or veneers
Can orthodontics be done with an implant in place?
Yes, but the implant doesn’t move: it is taken into account in the plan. That’s why orthodontics is often planned before an implant is placed.
How long before the implant can be placed?
It depends on how much movement is needed, often a few months. The estimated length is included in the written plan.
Can veneers replace orthodontics?
For small flaws, sometimes. For teeth that are clearly out of position, veneers would require reshaping a lot of enamel; orthodontics is then often the more conservative choice.
Is a retainer needed afterward?
Often, yes, to keep the teeth in place before and after the restoration. The dentist explains which type is suitable.
Does my insurance cover these steps?
Each step may be covered differently. We check your coverage and give you a written plan, step by step, before you start.
