01In brief

Crooked or crowded teeth: do they need treatment?

Not urgent · worth an evaluation

Crooked or crowded teeth are not an emergency, but they can make brushing and flossing harder and contribute to cavities, gum inflammation and wear. Treatment depends on how much crowding there is: clear aligners for many mild to moderate cases, braces for more pronounced cases. An evaluation at Go Dentiste, in Valleyfield or Vaudreuil-Dorion, shows what suits you: 514-533-3368.

02What to know

Understanding crowding

Crowding comes from a mismatch between the size of the teeth and the size of the jaws.

  1. Mild, moderate or severeThe dentist measures how much space is missing. The more space is missing, the longer the treatment and the more braces become an option to consider.
  2. Why it gets worseTeeth tend to crowd forward over the years, especially the lower ones. Mild crowding can therefore become more pronounced in adulthood.
  3. How space is createdBy slightly widening the arch, tipping the teeth, gently reducing a little enamel between certain teeth or, less often, removing a tooth.
  4. After alignmentA retainer is essential: without one, crowded teeth tend to drift back toward their old position.

Signs it’s worth coming in

  • Floss catches or shreds between certain teeth
  • Your gums always bleed in the same spot
  • A tooth sits out of line, forward or back
  • The crowding gets worse year after year
  • You avoid smiling because of your teeth

Good to know: Slightly reducing the enamel between two teeth, by a few tenths of a millimetre, is a common technique to create space. The dentist explains whether it is appropriate in your case.

03Options

The options by degree of crowding

The plan is set after the exam and X-rays.

  • Mild crowdingOften treated with clear aligners, sometimes in a few months, with or without slight enamel reduction between certain teeth.
  • Moderate crowdingAligners or braces, depending on the position of the teeth and the bite. Treatment takes longer, and a retainer is planned at the end.
  • Severe crowdingBraces are often preferred, sometimes with the removal of a tooth. A referral to an orthodontist may be suggested.

04At our clinics

Aligning crooked teeth at our clinics

At the evaluation, the dentist examines the position of the teeth, the available space and the health of the gums, then takes the X-rays needed. The dentist presents the options, the estimated length and the cost of each, in writing.

If there are cavities or gum inflammation, they are treated before starting: only healthy teeth are aligned.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions: crooked teeth

Are crooked teeth just a cosmetic problem?

Not always. Crowded teeth are harder to clean, which increases the risk of cavities and gum inflammation. Some can also wear abnormally.

Do teeth need to be removed to align them?

Rarely for mild crowding: space is usually created in other ways. Removing a tooth may be considered for severe crowding.

Are aligners enough?

For many mild to moderate cases, yes. For significant crowding, or crowding combined with a bite problem, braces may be more appropriate.

How long does it take?

From a few months for mild crowding to over a year for a moderate or severe case. The estimated length is included in the written plan.

My lower teeth are getting more crowded with age: is that normal?

It’s common: lower teeth tend to crowd forward over the years. If it bothers you or makes cleaning harder, an evaluation can show the options.
