01In brief

My front teeth don’t touch: what should I do?

Worth assessing · cause first

When your front teeth don’t touch as you close your mouth, it’s called an open bite. In children, it is often linked to a habit: sucking a thumb or pacifier, or a tongue that rests between the teeth. It can make it hard to bite through food with the front teeth and affect how certain sounds are pronounced. Treatment starts with the cause, then the teeth are repositioned if needed. Evaluation in Valleyfield or Vaudreuil-Dorion: 514-533-3368.

02What to know

Why the teeth don’t meet

An open bite often has several causes that add up.

  1. Sucking habitsA thumb, pacifier or finger placed between the teeth for years keeps the front teeth from coming in normally.
  2. Tongue positionA tongue that rests between the teeth when swallowing or at rest can keep the bite open, even after the sucking habit stops.
  3. Mouth breathingA nose that is often blocked (allergies, tonsils or adenoids) can encourage a low position of the tongue and jaw.
  4. Jaw growthIn some cases, the open bite comes from the shape of the bones. An orthodontist’s opinion is then recommended.

Signs to watch for

  • A space between the upper and lower front teeth with the mouth closed
  • Your child can’t bite through food with their front teeth
  • The tongue shows between the teeth when they speak or swallow
  • Certain sounds, like “s”, are mispronounced
  • They often breathe through their mouth or snore

Good to know: In young children, an open bite caused by a pacifier can close on its own once the habit stops. We discuss it at the exam before considering an appliance.

03Options

The options by cause

Correcting the cause is essential for the result to last.

  • Stopping the habitAdvice for the child and parents, sometimes with a reminder appliance that discourages sucking. It’s often the first step.
  • Retraining the tongueExercises with a professional, such as a speech-language pathologist, can help the tongue find a better position.
  • Braces, aligners or an orthodontistOnce the cause is under control, the teeth can be repositioned. If the shape of the jaws is involved, we refer you to an orthodontist.

04At our clinics

Open bite at our clinics

The dentist looks at how the teeth close, the position of the tongue and the child’s habits, and asks a few questions about breathing and sleep. The dentist then explains the possible steps, starting with the cause.

If another professional can help (a speech-language pathologist, a physician for a nose that is often blocked, an orthodontist for jaw growth), we tell you and explain why.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions: open bite

Does an open bite go away on its own?

Sometimes, in young children, after the pacifier or thumb-sucking stops. If it remains when the permanent teeth come in, an evaluation is recommended.

Does an open bite affect speech?

It can affect how certain sounds, like “s”, are pronounced. A speech-language pathologist can help, alongside dental follow-up.

Can aligners correct an open bite?

In some mild cases, in teens or adults, yes. The dentist first assesses the cause, because a poorly positioned tongue can make the open bite come back.

My teen has an open bite: is it too late?

No. The teeth can be repositioned. If the open bite comes from the shape of the jaws, an orthodontist’s opinion is recommended.

Can an open bite come back after treatment?

Yes, especially if the habit or tongue position continues. That’s why the cause is treated first, and a retainer is planned.
