01In brief
My upper teeth hide my lower teeth: is that a problem?
Worth assessing · rarely urgent
It’s normal for the upper teeth to cover the lower teeth slightly. When they hide them almost completely, it’s called a deep bite (deep overbite). It can wear down the front teeth and, in marked cases, make the lower teeth touch the gum behind the upper teeth. Treatment, with braces or aligners depending on the situation, aims to open the bite. 02What to know
Understanding deep bite
A mild deep bite is common and often harmless: how pronounced it is guides the decision.
- Normal or deep?An overlap of a few millimetres is normal. It’s called a deep bite when the lower teeth are almost completely hidden.
- Possible effectsWear on the edges of the front teeth, lower teeth touching the gum of the palate, jaw discomfort in some people.
- Often linkedA deep bite frequently goes with protruding upper teeth or a set-back lower jaw; the plan takes the whole picture into account.
- Correct, then stabilizeOpening a deep bite takes time, and a retainer is needed afterward to limit relapse.
Signs to watch for
- The lower teeth disappear behind the upper teeth
- The edges of the front teeth are wearing or chipping
- Irritation of the gum behind the upper teeth
- Jaw discomfort or grinding at night
- Uncomfortable contact when you close your mouth
Good to know: If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard can protect them from wear until orthodontic treatment, or alongside it.

03Options
Possible approaches
The choice depends on how pronounced the deep bite is and what causes it.
- MonitorA mild deep bite with no wear or discomfort: it is noted in your file and reviewed at regular check-ups.
- Braces or alignersTo open the bite by moving the front and side teeth. Braces are often chosen for more marked cases.
- Orthodontist’s opinionWhen the deep bite is linked to a significant jaw discrepancy, especially during growth, we refer you to an orthodontist.

06FAQ
Frequently asked questions: deep bite
Does a deep bite always need treatment?
No. A mild deep bite with no wear or discomfort can simply be monitored. Treatment is offered when it causes problems or is likely to.
Can aligners correct a deep bite?
They can correct it in some mild to moderate cases. For a significant deep bite, braces are often more appropriate.
Does a deep bite cause jaw pain?
Not necessarily. If you have jaw pain, tell the dentist: they assess all the possible causes.
How long does treatment take?
Often a year or more, because several teeth need to be moved. The estimated length is included in the written plan given to you before you start.
Can it come back after treatment?
Yes, relapse is possible. A retainer, worn as directed, limits that risk.
