01In brief
Misaligned jaw: who should you see and what are the options?
Often coordinated with an orthodontist
When the chin looks very far forward (lower jaw forward) or very set back, the problem doesn’t come only from the teeth, but also from the position of the jaws. During growth, an orthodontist can sometimes guide how the jaws develop; in adults, full correction often combines orthodontics and surgery. At Go Dentiste, our general dentists do the evaluation and, when appropriate, refer you to an orthodontist: 514-533-3368.

02What to know
What to know
In adults, a jaw discrepancy is rarely treated with orthodontics alone: the evaluation helps choose the right team.
- The teeth or the bone?Tipped teeth can make a jaw look misaligned. X-rays and an exam of the profile help tell the two apart.
- Growth changes everythingIn children and teens, jaw growth can sometimes be guided. Once growth is complete, only surgery moves the bone.
- A teamSignificant cases bring together an orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The general dentist refers you and provides your dental follow-up.
- The orthodontic compromiseIn some moderate cases, the bite can be improved by moving only the teeth. The dentist explains the limits of this approach.
Signs that call for an evaluation
- The lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth
- The chin looks clearly forward or set back in profile
- It’s hard to bite through or chew certain foods
- The lips have trouble closing
- Jaw fatigue or discomfort when chewing
Good to know: For a child whose lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth, an evaluation from age 6 or 7 is recommended: some options exist only during growth.

03Options
Possible approaches
The choice depends on age, how significant the discrepancy is and your expectations.
- During growthAn orthodontist may suggest an appliance that guides jaw growth. We refer you with the X-rays.
- Orthodontics aloneFor some moderate discrepancies, moving the teeth can improve the bite. The dentist explains what is realistic.
- Orthodontics and surgeryFor a significant discrepancy in adults: an orthodontist prepares the teeth, and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon repositions the jaw.
