01In brief

Braces or aligners for a teen: how do you choose?

Most often between ages 11 and 16

For teens, the choice between braces and clear aligners depends mainly on the problem to correct and how consistently they will be worn. Braces stay in place and suit most situations; aligners are discreet, but must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day to work. The dentist recommends the right option after the exam. At Go Dentiste, the Valleyfield clinic offers times on Tuesday evenings and on weekends: 514-533-3368.

02What to know

What really matters for a teen

The right choice is the one your teen will wear properly, all the way to the end.

  1. Wearing them is the keyAn aligner left in its case doesn’t move teeth. If daily wear is likely to be irregular, braces are often the safer choice.
  2. Hygiene counts doublePlaque builds up quickly around brackets: brushing after meals, interdental brushes and suitable floss help prevent white spots and cavities.
  3. Sports and musicA suitable mouthguard protects the lips and teeth during contact sports; for a wind instrument, a short adjustment period is normal.
  4. Regular visitsFollow-ups usually come every 4 to 10 weeks, depending on the appliance. Evening and weekend times in Valleyfield help avoid missing school.

What to plan before starting

  • A recent exam and cleaning
  • Treatment of any cavities
  • A check of your insurance
  • A follow-up schedule that works with school
  • A travel toothbrush and interdental brushes in the school bag

Good to know: Aligners come out for eating: they need to go back in right after brushing. At school, a case and a small travel toothbrush make a real difference.

03Options

The options for a teen

The dentist explains what suits your teen’s situation, and why.

  • Metal bracesVersatile and always in place, they suit most alignment and bite problems. The elastics can be coloured.
  • Ceramic bracesThe same principle, with tooth-coloured brackets that are more discreet. They are a little more fragile and are not suited to every situation.
  • Clear alignersDiscreet and removable, for many mild to moderate cases, as long as they are worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Appointments are often further apart.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions: orthodontics for teens

At what age are braces put on?

Most often between ages 11 and 14, once most of the permanent teeth are in. The exact timing depends on growth and the situation, assessed at the exam.

How long does treatment take for a teen?

Often 12 to 30 months for full treatment, less for limited alignment. The estimated length is included in the written plan.

Are aligners possible at 13 or 14?

Yes, for many situations, if the teen wears them 20 to 22 hours a day. The dentist assesses whether the case is suitable and whether wear will be consistent.

Can you play sports with braces?

Yes. For contact sports, a mouthguard designed for braces is strongly recommended. Ask the dentist about it.

What should they eat the first few days?

Soft foods: pasta, eggs, yogurt, soups. After that, avoid very hard or sticky foods, which can loosen a bracket or bend a wire.
